HCA has partnered with the City of Calgary to offer a Community Clean Up event this summer! Conveniently timed just after the Parade of Garage Sales, you can bring household items for trash or recycling, along with specific items that vendors will collect, such as sports gear and clothing.

IF YOUR ITEM CANNOT BE ACCEPTED BY THE CITY TRUCKS OR VENDORS, YOU MUST TAKE IT HOME. The HCA will not allow items to be dropped and left.

What is accepted?

  • Accepted items include (but are not limited to) furniture (desks, chairs, sofas, old mattresses, etc.), toilets, and recalled or broken recreational products.

Commonly seen items:

  • Furniture (mattresses, sofas, chairs, desks, dressers, etc.)
  • Toilets
  • Broken recreational items (old treadmills)
  • Lumber from old fences and decks
  • Weird items: garden gnome collection, broken grandfather clock, taxidermy items
  • Clothing (Donation to Kidney/Diabetes Association)
  • Electronics and Small Appliances (Alberta Recycling Authority)

What is not accepted?

  • Common restricted items include barbecues, lawnmowers, household chemicals and large appliances. The city trucks DO NOT accept these.
  • Not all items can be accepted at Community Cleanups as they cannot go in the garbage truck to be disposed of. Garbage trucks will not accept:
  • car batteries
  • glass (window panes, glass table tops, etc.)
  • household appliances with freon (refrigerator, freezer)
  • liquids (cooking oil)
  • household hazardous waste (propane tanks, paint)
  • automobile/cleaning/healthcare/gardening chemicals
  • railway ties
  • sod or dirt
